UNM Employee Wellness

My 6-week (184 hours) Community Rotation was with The University of New Mexico Employee Wellness program where I provided clients with weight loss counseling, wrote articles for newsletters, created marketing materials and a presentation for a corporate Wellness Expo.
This rotation was such a positive experience and a wonderful start to my internship. I learned so much about motivational interviewing, promoting change talk in clients, writing ADIME notes, counseling for several diseases, and presenting in front of large audiences.
During my time counseling clients, I practiced using motivational interviewing (MI) and meeting them where they are. I tried new MI techniques such as reflective listening, making affirmations, rhetorical questioning, confidence scales, eliciting change talk, and many more. I now feel confident I can motivate and empower a patient or client if they are ambivalent towards change.
Community Rotation Highlights
I participated in the UNM Well-Being Expo, a corporate Wellness Expo where I presented to faculty, staff, retirees, and students about eating healthfully on a budget.
Please see my presentation below:
I also participated in a LifeSteps class, presenting to UNM faculty and staff looking for weight-loss guidance. We discussed making healthier food choices using the MyPlate schematic and I led an activity using food models.

I enjoyed writing two weekly Healthy Eating Topic emails for the University’s Listserve, one on Intermittent Fasting and the other on Healthy Eating at the Fair.
